If you’re currently dealing with a dental emergency, we strongly encourage you to call our office immediately. The sooner you call, the faster we can treat the issue and alleviate tooth pain. We leave room in our schedule for emergency appointments so we can see you the same day you call.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you experience a dental emergency, we advise you to call us so that we can guide you on any steps you should take before you get to our office. For a toothache, you should gently brush and floss to remove any potential debris and rinse with warm salt water. If your crown falls off or your tooth is knocked out, try to put it back over your tooth or in the socket and keep it in place by biting down on gauze on your way to your emergency visit.

How can I relieve tooth pain?

There are a few things you can do at home to relieve the pain of a toothache before you come in to see us. The first and most obvious solution is to take pain medication that is prescribed to you or over-the-counter pain medication. You can also use a cold compress to ice the area and numb the pain. Creating a warm salt water rinse and swishing it around your mouth for 15 to 30 seconds can also work well to relieve inflammation and soreness. If your toothache gets to the point where it becomes unbearable, please come in right away so we can assist.

Should I go to the dentist or the emergency room?

Sometimes patients will head to an emergency room for a broken tooth or pain in the mouth or jaw, but often the emergency room can’t do much except refer them to a dental practice that accepts dental emergencies. Dentists are very well-informed in issues related to the teeth, gums, mouth, and jaw, and emergency room doctors don’t typically have the expertise or tools required to take care of these problems. If you have a broken jaw or are suffering from other injuries that are more time-sensitive and not dental-related, that is when you will want to go straight to an emergency room.

It depends on the insurance plan, and it’s always a good idea to ask your provider about emergency dental care and what services they cover before a dental emergency occurs. In a true emergency, the most important thing is to get to our office right away so we can offer immediate help.
