Is a Crown Falling Out a Dental Emergency?

A dental crown is a cap placed on top of damaged or weak teeth. Though dental crowns can last up to ten to fifteen years with proper care, over time, pressure from biting or speaking can cause a crown to become loose or weak. A loose crown is one reason a dental crown can fall out, but is it a dental emergency?

Dental Crown Emergency

Since a dental crown protects weak or damaged teeth, a crown that has fallen out or has broken can be considered a dental emergency. But there is no need to panic. Here are three steps to take when your dental crown falls out!

1. Contact Your Dentist

Though there may not be blood or major discomfort, a dental crown falling out is an emergency as the underlying tooth is exposed and unprotected. This places the tooth at risk of deteriorating or infection. As soon as your crown falls out, contact your dentist.

2. Clean & Cover the Crown

If you still have the crown that has fallen out, clean it off and place it in a container to take with you to your dental appointment. Depending on the crown and tooth condition, we may or may not be able to place it back into your mouth.

3. Protect Your Tooth

Though getting same-day emergency dental care is ideal, it may not be possible. Until your dental appointment, you should protect your tooth as much as possible. For example, chew on the opposite side of your mouth of which the filling is missing, and as always, maintain good oral hygiene.
