As dedicated dental professionals, we see our workspace as a safe, welcoming place where life-changing transformations happen. But given that we’ve worked for years with all of our special dental equipment and tools, we know that we may have a different view on it all than the average patient.

It’s very common for patients to have a fear of the items we might use for treatments like needles during oral surgery, or even the sounds of dental work. That doesn’t have to stop you from getting the quality dental care you need and deserve though! Dental sedation has helped many people with dental-related phobia stay relaxed and take care of their smile.

Benefits of Dental Sedation

Dental sedation is commonly used when someone is getting a more complex or invasive treatment like oral surgery, but there’s more to it than that. With its calming effects, dental sedation can help people with dental phobia and anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, trouble sitting still, and more.

Types of Dental Sedation

Dental sedation varies in how it’s administered and how deep its effects are. On the mild side of things is nitrous oxide or laughing gas. This is administered through a nose mask, and it makes people feel content and relaxed. Once the mask is off and you breathe normal air, it takes just a few minutes for the effect to wear off.

Another type of dental sedation is oral conscious sedation. With this option, your dental team gives you a pill that you take orally a specified amount of time before your appointment, timed to take effect during your treatment. As the name suggests, you still remain conscious with oral conscious sedation, but you may feel a little groggier. These feelings wear off after a few hours.
